birthday!

Eme is 5 today! For some reason I'm having a hard time grasping that. Maybe it's because she's my baby. Maybe it's because her birth was so traumatic. She is quite certain that she is NOT a baby, and she's right, of course. She's FIVE for crying out loud.



Bless her, she is taking it easy on dear old Mom this year. For her birthday dinner she has ordered meat loaf, potatoes, mac and cheese, and peas. I'm not kidding. She came up with the menu entirely on her own.



She also ordered a homemade cake - nothing like her sister's dolphin covered, sugar filled extravaganza. I asked her what shape she would like for her cake, and she looked at me like I had two heads. "Mom - it's called a rec-tan-gle." I can do a rectangle. Sure I can. 9x13 pan. No problem. Somehow I feel like she's being cheated. Mostly it feels great to know that our children are happiest with the simple, ordinary life we have chosen, even on special days.
